IHFES offers a variety of membership categories to cater to the needs of professionals at all stages of their careers:
- Fellow (FIHFES): For experienced professionals who have made a significant contribution to the field.
- Registered Member (MIHFES): For professionals actively working in ergonomics and human factors.
- Associate Member (AIHFES): For those interested in the profession or transitioning into it.
- Student Member (SIHFES): For students enrolled in ergonomics or related disciplines.
- Retired Member (RIHFES): For retired professionals who wish to remain engaged with the community.
Membership categories, their post-nominal letters and their fees are as below:
- Fellows (FIHFES); €55.00
- Registered Members (MIHFES); €50.00
- Associate members (AIHFES); €25.00
- Student members (SIHFES); €10.00
- Retired members (RIHFES); €10.00
Post-nominal letters
Members are encouraged to use the Society’s post-nominals letters (FIHFES, MIHFES, AIHFES, SIHFES, RIHFES).
Instructions in using post-nominal letters:
- Relevant post-nominal letters (as per table above) can be used after members’ name e.g. Jo Doe, AIHFES
- Post -nominal letters are encouraged to be used in any professional / research, formal or informal communication such as: email signatures, conference presentations, publications, networking, LinkedIn page, etc.
Applications
Membership applications are reviewed typically every month by the society’s committee.

Fees
Fees are per annum, from January to December each year.
Requirements
Student
Anyone enrolled in a course in ergonomics or cognate subject.
Associate
Anyone who has a third level qualification in a subject area that interfaces with Human Factors/ Ergonomics or anyone that has an interest in the application of Human Factors/Ergonomics.
Registered Member
Routes to registered membership:
1. Subject matter expert by way of holding a Ph.D. in a Human Factors/Ergonomics subject plus normally two ISI peer reviewed journal papers as first author.
2. Graduate from a recognised qualifying taught masters: including having completed their thesis on a Human Factors/Ergonomics topic).
- Graduates from Masters in Environmental Health and Safety and Human Factors from Technical University Dublin, from the Masters in Safety and Ergonomics from the University of Limerick, and Masters in Occupational Safety and Ergonomics from NUIG.
- Graduates with a Master Degree from another country that is recognised for full graduate membership in that country will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
3. Human Factors/Ergonomics Competency assessment:
Applicants who have completed a masters qualification (NCTE level 9) and obtained skills through non-recognised qualifying programmes can consider two routes to entry based on their level of Human Factors/ Ergonomics competency.
- Complete a self-evaluation competency assessment. If the Applicant meets the minimum criteria, they can apply through this route.
- If an applicant have some Human Factors/Ergonomics competencies but not the minimum (as evaluated through the self-assessment), they can consider sitting additional courses to meet the criteria, for example the Human Factors and Ergonomics Module in Technical University Dublin, or other alternative courses to meet the competency requirements.

Fellow
Normally a registered member of the IHFES for a minimum of 10 years and has made an important contribution to the Society/Discipline.
It is acknowledged that in some circumstances Ph.D. graduates are precluded from publishing scientific papers on confidentiality grounds. In such circumstances, the Committee will evaluate these applications on a case by case basis.
